writing coach

“When I write, I feel like an armless, legless man with a crayon in his mouth.”
— Kurt Vonnegut

approach

Writing is a worthy process. Writing takes too much time. Writing is dreadful. Writing is healing. Writing is a necessity. Writing is a dying art. Writing is important. Writing is a joke. I feel good writing. I feel bad writing. I’m hungry. I’m lonely. I’m bored. Am I even a writer?

I relate to all of the above and more! I’ve taught writing in-class for five years (K-12), as well as private sessions since 2020 (adult learners), and have worked on my own projects for over fifteen years. I came to Vancouver to pursue my MFA in Playwriting at The University of British Columbia in 2015 and have since pursued a standup comedy career.

I like to approach sessions playfully, with curiosity, and non-authoritatively. Writing is a process of discovery—I don’t have your answers! You do. I’m here to cheerlead and coach as you dare your way forward.

personalized sessions

There is a toolbox full of tips, tricks, structures, and rules we can always pull from to shape up our writing. Show, don’t tell, etc. What I love offering clients is insight into their voice—their instincts, their patterns, their inspirations—that empowers the writer to go after what she wanted to say all along.

I am passionate about helping writers become self-sufficient authors and editors of their own work. I want to illuminate the ‘why’ behind choices so that you feel confident and clear about your work.

I work with clients on their project-specific goals, as well brainstorming seeds so you plant them to see roots blossom into finished scripts, essays, formal letters, memoirs, and books. My goal for every session is helping you unlock the door to the next room of your project—the one that feels like such a stubborn mystery—and having you go, “Oh YES! Ok—I see where to go next.”

generative writing

Also don’t be afraid to ask if you have a rough idea for a project or piece and would like help drafting. I’ve collaborated with clients before to help draft letters and writing that they didn’t know how to get started, get organized, or get down. You always have the final say.

“I started working with K.C. in 2021, and our coaching sessions keep me accountable to my writing goals. She is inspiring and fun to meet with, which are two important motivators for me with creative work. Sessions are a mix of writing exercises, workshopping ideas, and editing with follow-up goals and recommendations. Work with this woman!”

— Candice B, Coaching Client
“K.C. did an amazing job helping us reframe our approach to setting up a writing routine and giving us techniques for how to deal with internal friction that often stops us from entering a creative headspace. She also broke down the writing process in a way that was very valuable, something a writer of any level could use.”
— Stefan S., Long Distance Writing Student
